Grand Marshall First Sergeant Nathan McKoy

Master Sergeant Nathan McKoy, USMC (retired) enlisted in the Marine Corps in April 1975. He graduated from Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD), Parris Island, SC and reported to Headquarters and Service Company, Infantry Infantry Training School, Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, CA.

In February 1978, McKoy received orders to the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, Okinawa, Japan, and was meritoriously promoted to Sergeant. Following this tour, he reported to Headquarters and Service Company, Headquarters Battalion, Headquarters, US Marine Corps, and was placed on charge of the color guard detail. In August 1981, he was transferred to the Drill Instructor School at MCRD Camp Pendleton, CA and subsequently served as a Drill Instructor for eight platoons. He was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant during this tour.

McKoy was next assigned to the 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, NC as the Administrative/S-1 Chief for the unit. In 1985, he reported to Headquarters and Serve Battalion, Camp Smith, HI as the Communications Security Material System Chief. He was transferred to Officer Candidates School, Marine Corps Combat Development Command, Quantico, VA in September 1978 for duty as the Sergeant Instructor Platoon Commander and Company Gunnery Sergeant. He was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in May 1989. In 1991, he was assigned to 3rd Force Support Group, Okinawa, Japan as the Administrative Chief. McKoy completed is Marine Corps career in the Enlisted Promotion Branch as the S-1 Chief, retiring in November 1996.

His awards and Decorations include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal (7th Award), Humanitarian Service Medal, National Defense Ribbon, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (2nd Award), Drill Instructor Ribbon, Rifle Marksmanship Award—Expert (13th Award), and Pistol Marksmanship—Expert.

Upon retiring from the Marine Corps, First Sergeant McKoy joined the Prince William Sheriff’s Department, serving in myriad functions. While progressing through the ranks and to his current rank as First Sergeant, he has served in the Courts Division and the Operations Division. McKoy supervises the Transportation and Warrant Section. He is also the lead for the Department’s Honor Guard—responsible for the training of the Honor Guard members and organizing the Guard for community events.

In 2010, First Sergeant McKoy was honored as “Deputy of the Year”. He had attended the Administrative Officers Management Program (2000), where he served as Class President, and the West Point Leadership Course (2010).
